El Conflict of Interest in the University Setting
I Know It When I See It
Abstract
Potential conflicts of interest are a fact of life at research universities today. This paper offers guidelines for dealing with potential conflicts openly and directly, making it possible for university administrators to balance the institutional risks and benefits of relationships and interests faculty may have with outside agencies or companies. The paper offers basic definitions, flags the kinds of activities that may raise conflict-of-interest questions, and provides guidelines for assessing risks to the institution. It provides advice on developing effective conflict-of-interest policies and procedures that will minimize risk to the university and the individual.
